Arts Council conference on architecture centres highlights diversity of approaches

Article Abstract:

The Arts Council organised a conference on architecture centres in Apr 1993. The conference heard presentations from a variety of such centres which illustrated the diversity of the types of undertakings. The Philadelphia Foundation for Architecture is a wealthy body that aims to encourage interaction between architects and the public. The Urban Studies Centre, Canterbury, England struggles for funds and aims to inform local people about architecture and development. The Pavilion de l'Arsenal in France and the Zuiderkerk in Holland provided further examples of diversity.

LSE's Bauhaus for the 1990s

Article Abstract:

The London School of Economics' (LSE) planned department of architecture and civic design will focus on the links between architecture and the social sciences. A course plan has already received preliminary approval, and will next be considered by the LSE's academic board, with the department likely to be in operation by October 1994. Around 20 students will be involved, and education and research will look mainly at urban structure as a whole, rather than at individual buildings.
