As China rises, must others bow?

Article Abstract:

China is becoming increasingly important in military and economic terms, and there are divisions within the US as to how the US should respond to this trend. China's economy is growing, but there are problems with the banking system and currency. The military strength of China is likely to increase, but it is unlikely to enjoy regional hegemony while the US is active in East Asia. The US provides stability in East Asia and China and other countries can benefit from this stability. Strategic concerns mean that the US has good reason to pursue friendship with China.

Welcome to China, Mr Clinton

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton's visit to China in Jun 1998 acknowledges the increasing importance of China in Asia. China has undergone changes but still has to carry out further major economic change and is still very fragile. Reforms are needed to facilitate fast economic growth and these reforms will bring unemployment. There is a limit to the business that can be carried out by the US and China together. There are divisions between China and the US, and talks help deal with these differences, but over-optimism should be avoided.
