Asia may get glimpse of TV future

Article Abstract:

An alliance between Intel Corp and Pacific Century Group is set to develop a new generation of digital-television set-top boxes that may first be tested in India and China. A $50 million investment was made by Intel in Pacific Century's Pacific Century Cyberworks Ltd as part of its plans to produce high-speed Internet content and satellite television by the year 2000 for the Chinese and Indian markets. The set-top boxes would deliver digital TV and Internet content services to users, ranging from weather reports to online stock trading.

Serome Technology is abandoning its initial strategy of providing free web-to-phone services financed by Internet advertising. As stock prices have fallen 92% from their high of 154,00 won early last year, the Korean company is implementing cost reduction strategies and plans to receive 70% of its 2001 revenue by selling international phone cards and by reselling discounted phone services.

Google turns to Asian Web market

Google Inc. increases appeal to Asian users by adding Chinese, Korean and Japanese language search tools. Non-Englsih speaking Internet users make up half of users worldwide: Chinese users (5.2%), Korean users (3.6%) and Japanese users (7.2%).
