Asia rebuilds links

Article Abstract:

South Africa has historic links with Asian countries that were broken with the introduction of apartheid in 1948. These ties are being restored with modern South Africa which has seen its share of investment from Asia increase. Tourism from Asia is growing and Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and others have increased the number of flights they operate to South African destinations. BMW South Africa finds the Indian Ocean Rim a favorable market and exports cars from South Africa to Pakistan.

The South African currency remains problematic, however, and declined sharply against the dollar in early 1996.
