Asian banks can learn from their competitors

Article Abstract:

Asian banks competing in the sluggish regional financial market can take a lesson from their international counterparts, who have leveraged mergers and acquisitions to their advantage in serving not only the domestic but also the international market. Mergers and acquisitions can help Asian banks in three ways: a quick way to recapitalize , a broader distribution of products and services and the ability to recover lost customers. Mergers and acquisitions also offer significant benefits such as a rationalization of resources, reduction of overhead, increased customer confidence and a pool of new management and marketing ideas.

Expand money supply, slay the deflationary dragon

Article Abstract:

The specter of falling prices or deflation is now being confronted by Asian nations after their bout with inflation. Specifically, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong are now facing the prospect of deflation. Deflation is usually set off by a period of investment following the discovery of a new technology or resource. This is then followed by an overextension of credit. The sudden tightening of monetary policy as a reaction to overinvestment triggers a deflationary effect in the economy. This is usually accompanied by a drop in the stock market and financial scandals.
