Asian economies are unfazed by U.S. rate outlook

Article Abstract:

Asian economies seem to be untroubled by the possibility of higher US interest rates. The US Federal Reserve has indicated that it might raise interest rates in the succeeding months because of concerns about inflation. An important aspect which is expected to counter the impact of higher interest rates is Asia's collective trade account. The total current-account deficit of Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines which was $26 billion in 1997 has transformed into a $68 billion surplus in 1998.
