Asia's improving economies are luring private capital

Article Abstract:

The influx of private capital into Asia's recovering economies is signalling an improvement in the region's economic health but this should not be interpreted as the start of another borrowing binge. Instead, the funds have been allotted to debt servicing. The Institute of International Finance also disclosed that more capital is entering the countries than is leaving. The institute predicts a combined net inflow of $5.1 billion for the economies of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand by the end of 1999 compared to a net outflow of $38.6 billion in 1998.

China leads in Asian piracy

Article Abstract:

The US software industry reported that its piracy-related losses in China increased over twofold in 1997 to more than $1.4 bil. According to the industry, it only lost more money in the US, which usually ranks first in the piracy-loss charts because of the comprehensive computer usage in the US. Moreover, China dislodged Japan as the biggest source of piracy losses in Asia, notwithstanding the greater number of installed software applications in Japan.
