At 50, the Tokyo Stock Exchange is hurting

Article Abstract:

The Tokyo Stock Exchange's (TSE) 50th anniversary celebration was mired with uncertainty over its future. Where once it was one of the major exchanges in the world, it is on its way to becoming a second-rate regional exchange. This development is caused by the delisting of the overwhelming majority of its listed foreign companies which took their business elsewhere. The 125 foreign companies that were listed in 1990 declined to 73 in Mar 1996 and declined further to only 48 companies by Mar 1999.

Taiwan posts rare deficit; exports weakened by hog-disease epidemic

Article Abstract:

Taiwan posted a trade deficit of $203.5 mil in April, 1997. Deficits are unusual, and there was a $845.1 mil surplus recorded in April 1996. An epidemic of hog disease lowered April exports to Japan, which is the largest importer of Taiwanese pork, by 22% to $972.8 million. Defense purchases, which reached about $387.1 million, caused import figures to increase by 8.9% to $37 billion.
