Banca Intesa S.p.A. of Italy is under pressure to increase market share after the merger Of Unicredito Italiano S.p.A. with Germany's HVB Group AG. Chief Executive Officer Corrado Passera of Intesa S.p.A. is to announce a strategic plan for the next three years that is expected to streamline retail operations, grow corporate business and increase market share in Eastern Europe.

Telefonica wins Telecom Italia stake, not control

Telefonica S.A., together with three Italian financial firms, has acquired a controlling 18% stake in Telecom Italia S.p.A. for $5.6 bil. in a deal that maintains ownership of Telecom Italia in Italy. The financial firms involved include the Italian banks Mediobanca S.p.A. and Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A., and insurance company Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A.

Telefonica works to increase stake in China Netcom

Spanish firm Telefonica S.A. is increasing its stake in China Netcom Group Corp. from 5% to 9.9%. The current market value for China Netcom, the nations second-biggest fixed-line operator by subscribers, is approximately $21.4 bil.
