Atomic engineering

Article Abstract:

Atoms are extensively being studied for engineering applications. International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) researchers have made inroads into atomic engineering, but remain convinced that they are still years away from developing technological applications. This view is not shared by Japanese researchers who believe that IBM's research concentrates too much on applications that use wires. Instead, atomicmanipulation would be better applied to processes that build chemical catalysts or design better lubricants. To this end, the Japanese government has funded several practical research, including the Atomcraft Project.

Japanese diversity

Article Abstract:

Researchers from the US and Japan reveal diverse strategies adopted by Japanese companies at managing innovation. Unlikein US firms, the Japanese directly recruit fresh college graduates and are responsible in setting up their indoctrination and training. In Japan, the different factors which companies attempt to familiarize themselves, such as factors affecting the market, customer satisfaction and technology will each require their own managing innovation. In addition, Japanese companies adopt strategies in order to minimize risks while at the same time increase long-termresearch and development.

Setting up on enemy ground

Article Abstract:

The number of overseas research and development (R&D) facilities set up by Japanese corporations has increased in the past six years. This step is the last in a long process of gaining a foothold in foreign countries, starting with local distributorships which led to fully owned sales companies and later on to local manufacturing and design. Having R&D facilities abroad allows Japanese corporations to derive technological development using foreign skills. Foreign R&D facilities could also provide long-term benefits by allowing Japan to get around the growing trade protectionism in Europe.
