Attacks could boost telecommunications industry

Article Abstract:

The telecommunications industry could benefit from the terrorist attacks of September 11, due to an increase in business teleconferencing and videoconferencing and due to a reduction in interest rates announced in the U.S. and Europe to help buoy the economy. Of course, a recession would in general hurt the telecommunication firms, and some business simply cannot be done except with face to face meetings.

Air-flight jitters may boost video-conferencing services

Article Abstract:

Businesspeople afraid of flying after the terrorist attacks on the U.S. may resort to using videoconferencing, thus benefiting telecommunications companies. More demand for videoconferencing could also speed rollout of broadband Internet services. However, a widespread recession may offset any short-term lifts to the telecommunications industry.

Japan car shares downshift

Article Abstract:

Shares of Japanese auto makers have dropped up to 40% since the terrorist attacks. U.S. auto sales have slowed greatly, and a weakening dollar will hurt the value of Japanese sales when converted into yen. A prolonged sales slowdown may force Japan's car manufacturers to cut back on U.S. production expansion plans.
