Japanese seek fresh produce: poor weather leads stores to import vegetables

Article Abstract:

Japanese supermarkets, suffering from a dearth in fresh vegetables due to the poor weather in the country, are resorting to imports. The country has suffered unusually excessive rains and plenty of typhoon damage. According to the country's Agriculture Ministry, the prices of 14 favorite vegetables in late October 1998 were nearly twofold the average prices in 1997. Cement ranks as another increasing Japanese import from the rest of the Asian region.
