Australian bourse boosts its profile with Asian Index

Article Abstract:

The Australian Stock Exchange has launched a marketing strategy designed to attract Asian companies to the exchange. It developed the Asian Index whose purpose is to promote Asian companies as investment vehicles and to broaden Australia's local stock market. It also made moves to unveil a new depositary receipt system, lengthen trading hours and reduce share transaction costs through the lowering of stamp-duty taxes.

Some of Asia's ailing companies are resorting to Asia's new concept of renting chief executive officers in an effort to cope with the region's troubled times. According to recruiters, employing interim chief executives may be the clever approach to cope up with the difficult times. One advantage of short-term chief executives is that they can serve as tutors to the company's senior staff.

Asian firms are seeking the expertise of financial managers to guard them against currency devaluation and slumps brought about by economic cycles. Businesses are finding the need for financial expertise as the message conveyed by currency devaluation is that they should brace themselves for increased competition brought about by an increased rate in market liberalization.
