Australian privatisations put in the pending file

Article Abstract:

It is predicted that Australian electricity and gas assets will eventually be offered for sale. However, assets in New South Wales are not likely to be available before the election on 27 Mar 1999. The Labor Party has rejected plans for privatization and trade unions are also against the idea. Privatization in Tasmania depends on the election on 29 Aug. The government wants to sell off Hydro-Electric Corp's transmission and distribution sector. Delays in selling shares may deter potential investors and this would reduce the revenue from sales.

Victorian gas on the back-burner

Article Abstract:

The government of the Australian state of Victoria delayed the sale of its gas assets in July 1998, but October brings new discussion of scheduling. Rate regulations were made in July which threatened the sale, but these regulations were changed in October. The regulations had lowered companies' maximum return on capital, making privatization less lucrative.
