Australia's Manoora LPA undocks

Article Abstract:

The HMAS Manoora, the first of the two landing platform amphibious (LPA) craft of the Royal Australian Navy (RNA), has been undocked at Forgacs Dockyard in Newcastle, Australia. The HMS Manoora is anticipated to be handed over in late-1998, to be followed six months later by the second LPA, the HMAS Kanimbla. The two former US Navy LPAs were originally known as the landing ships, tanks (LSTs) USS Saginaw and USS Fairfax County. The conversion effort that transformed them into RNA craft, worth some A$108 million, primarily encompassed the widening of the foredeck to enable a third landing area, and installation of hangars to accommodate four S-70 Black Hawk or two CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The LPAs will operate in collaboration with Ausrtalia's amphibious heavy lift ship (LSL) HMAS Tobruk.
