Austria: AUA tries to restore to profitability

Article Abstract:

Austrian Airlines, AUA, is facing severe obstacles in its attempt to restore profitability. The executive committees of AUA, Lauda Air, Tyrolean and Rheintalflug are planning to cut staff costs by 15%. They are planning to fire over 900 members of staff, to lower salaries by 7% and to stop taking new employees. The works committees and the HTV, the Austrian trade union of trade, transportation and traffic, do not want to accept these measures and respective negotiations have so far been unsuccessful. On 12 December 2001 the AUA management is to announce a plan on how to tackle the problem.
