Austria: AUA gives profit warning

Article Abstract:

Austrian Airlines rejected rumours about a loss of more than Sch 2bn in 2001, but said that it expects "major losses". Before the changes of market conditions as a result of the US terrorist attacks, AUA had expected to reach break even. Beside the loss of revenue , the airline is faced with increased costs of security and insurance. Moreover, it will be difficult to find buyers for the aircraft becoming redundant. AUA is to reduce fleet capacity by 10%. Two long-distance jumbos and two medium-distance planes will become redundant. The Boeing 777 ordered by Lauda Air will not be needed. AUA is in talks about staff cuts and is to stop serving a number of connections from 28 October 2001. Ticket prices will be increased by 5% on average. The hikes will not, however, affect flights to Germany and Scandinavia.
