Rannatal: Naturschutz statt Kraftwerksbau

Article Abstract:

Ober sterreichische Kraftwerke AG (OKA) has withdrawn its application for the construction of a pumped storage power station in the Ranna valley. OKA, which owns 80% of the valley, agreed with the Lower Austrian environmental protection authorities to make the valley a protected area until year 2010. However, the power company did not agree to put the valley, which has a rich in lichens, under the Natura 2000 programme.

Article Abstract:

By March 1999 Freudenberg Schuh GmbH (formerly Elefanten-Schuhe) of Kleve, Germany is to close production of children's and other shoes at its plant in Gmunden, Austria. In spring 1998 Freudenberg started production in Partizanske, Slovakia. The move involves the loss of 160 jobs in Gmunden, but skilled staff are to be offered jobs in Slovakia or Portugal, which will be the only remaining shoe factories of the company.
