Austria: Best Connect is cheapest for businesses

Article Abstract:

Kaernten-based telecoms provider Best Connect is the cheapest provider for small and medium sized businesses, charging Sch 0.49 per minute within Austria 24 hours a day. Although other alternative telecoms companies offer prices as low as Sch 0.29 per minute, this is only for off-peak calls. Peak-time calls, when most businesses operate, at least to Sch 0.66 per minute. Local calls with Telecom Austria cost Sch 0.45 per minute, but national calls cost Sch 0.75. Best Connect claims to have achieved a 14% market share in the states of Kaernten, Stiermark and Burgenland, where it has 8,000 business customers. After one month operating in Oberoesterreich it has 1,000 customers in the state. According to Best Connect's director Robert Baurecht, the company receives between 80 and 100 calls a day from businesses interested in Best Connect's service. The company aims to have 12,000 customers across Austria by the end of 2001.

AUSTRIA: TELEKOM SHARES FOR EUR 9

Article Abstract:

The issue price of the shares of Telekom Austria was set at EUR 9. This follows a 10% fall in the stock prices of telecom companies in the past two weeks. Issue volume was reduced from 140mn to 128.8mn shares. In Austria's biggest share issue so far, OIAG will raise just under Sch 16bn, not including discounts for early bookers and loyalty bonuses. OIAG will have to give Telecom Italia shares worth about Sch 3bn to compensate for the fact that the price paid by Telecom Italia for its 25.01% stake in Telekom Austria was higher, at EUR 11.87. The shareholding of Telecom Italia in the former Austrian monopoly thus rises to 29.8%.
