Austria: Unsatisfactory performance by Post Office

Article Abstract:

The Austrian Post Office's turnover in 2001 is around Sch 21.7bn in 2001, instead of the anticipated Sch 23bn. In the time of the Internet, letters are no longer as popular, nor are new products proving to be successful. Many new products generated less turnover than was invested in them in the first place, despite an advertising budget of Sch 300mn. The Post Office's four boards have not been able to come to an agreement regarding the budget for 2002. Furthermore, around 640 post offices are being shut and the employment numbers being reduced to 6000 by 2003. The course of business in 2001 will be discussed at a meeting with the board of directors on 4 December 2001. A look at what is to happen in 2002 is also on the agenda. The budget will also be settled. The top management of the Post Office has been accused of lacking direction, with the long discussed new structure still not having been implemented. Anton Wais, chairman of the post office is to attend a conference with the head of its parent company, the Austrian state holding company OIAG.

AUSTRIA: POST TO CUT STAFF

Article Abstract:

The Austrian Post is negotiating with the works council about the reduction of workforce. Under the new director general Anton Wais, the Post is said to be aiming to cut costs by more than Sch 2.5bn by 2003. This could mean the loss of about 5,000 jobs. Since the beginning of 1998 about 3,000 post staff have already accepted redundancy by means of a so-called social plan. The Post, which employs about 32,000 people in total, sees savings potential especially in the logistics sector, which has 6,000 staff. Savings are to be achieved by automation. The Post is spending Sch 3bn on six new letter and parcel sorting centres.
