Austria: New measures in job creation

Article Abstract:

New measures in job creation in order to speed up the placement of the unemployed are in discussion between Austrian government officials and social welfare partners, taking into consideration employers and employees proposals, which they can deposit in the last week of November. Until now the employment market service (AMS) could only look into jobs different from the former occupation of the unemployed person after one year of unemployment. According to the ideas of employment secretary Martin Bartenstein this time span should be reduced to 13 weeks and also jobs that only roughly meet the qualifications of the unemployed person should be chosen for a placement. Another point of criticism is the limitation of the search by community borders, it should also be made possible for the AMS to find positions outside of the own community borders taking into consideration public transport links and car possession. The worker association together with the Austrian federation of trade unions (OGB) will demand a right for qualification and subsistence for the unemployed and prevent them from having to accept inferior positions.

AUSTRIA: ANTIBIOTICS IN PRAWNS

Article Abstract:

After tests by the environment organisation Greenpeace disclosed traces of antibiotics in prawns sold in Austrian supermarkets, the Merkur trade group withdrew the products affected. Chloramphenicol was detected in at least in one sample tested in a laboratory in Stuttgart. This agent is not allowed for use on animals in the European Union. In 1999 Austria's imports of prawns doubled to 580 tonnes.
