Austria: Reorganisation of waste material law

Article Abstract:

The reorganisation of the waste material law (AWG) will inflict costs of about Sch 5,5bn in the first year, and Sch 3,5bn in following years on businesses, as estimated by the Austrian chamber of economics (WKO). The trade warranty of the waste disposal businesses and the businesses internal waste recycling systems will be integrated into the waste material law. This will affect extensive duties in documentation and licences for businesses, and is expressly criticised by the president of the WKO, Christoph Leitl. With the reorganisation of the law the definition of waste material and the obligation to inform regulation will be standardised federally. An exception is hazardous waste, for which a difference between federal and country competence is still kept up.

Austria: Criticism of waste legislation

Article Abstract:

Environmental experts at the Austrian Workers Council (Arbeiterkammer) have criticised the new waste disposal legislation, claiming that some of the terms are not defined closely enough and that there are not enough exact technical regulations for areas such as mechanical-biological waste disposal. According to Wolfgang Lauber of the Workers Council, the means for checking that the regulations are being carried out are not satisfactory. Supervision should be the responsibility of the provinces, not the regions, who do not have the expertise to do so.
