Austria: Restructuring of infrastructure plans

Article Abstract:

The government in Austria has restructured its plans for improving the railways, and is to re-open certain plans which were originally rejected. The highest priority routes will be the Danube Corridor, the southern route and the Brenner route, although the tunnel at Semmering has been rejected. Instead of this there will be a Sch 2.6mn restructuring of the existing Semmering mountain railway. The extension of the station at Huetteldorf has also been approved. This and other similar projects have been forced through by the leaders of the provinces, particularly Carinthia's Joerg Haider. It is not yet clear how the plans will be financed although in individual cases the money from the heavy goods vehicle road tolls could be used.
