AUSTRIA/GERMANY: RWE EYEING AUSTRIAN MARKET

Article Abstract:

According to director Manfred Remmel, Europe's third-biggest electricity supplier, RWE of Germany is interested in participating in the privatisation of Wiener Stadtwerke. RWE is already cooperating with the Vienna utility company in supplying electricity to the Opel factory in Vienna. In cooperation with Steweag , RWE is seeking a contract to supply electricity to and handle waste disposal for the Austrian plants of Magna. According to Mr Remmel, however, RWE's main focus will be on other European markets. The group has earmarked EUR 25bn for acquisitions and for warding off unfriendly takeover bids in the next ten years. In the same period, the group aims to raise its share of the European energy market from 2% to 10-15% and gain a foothold in the US.

Austria: Waste incineration at cement mills

Article Abstract:

New rules by Austria's environment and economics ministries allow cement mills to incinerate more waste than in the past. The cement industry association says that the industry has a capacity to incinerate 200,000 tonnes of waste per year. The industry's overall fuel requirement is 400,000 tonnes per year. A spokesman for the industry said that a 70% waste content would be ideal. Thus the industry would save costs of a three-digit million amount. Operators of pure waste incineration plants, however, criticise the fact that they are subject to a nitrogen oxide emission limit of 100 mg, while for cement mills the limit is 500 mg to 800 mg.
