Merck's net rises despite lag in sales of arthritis drug

Merck and Co. posted an increase of 11% in its 2001 first-quarter net income. The company, which posted disappointing sales of its Vioxx arthritis drug, posted $1.66 billion (1.84 billion euros) in quarterly net income.
