BBVA tests Italian waters

Article Abstract:

Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria S.A. of Spain has an all stock bid for acquisition of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro S.p.A. of Italy for approximately $8.29 billion. Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria S.A. is awaiting the decision of Antonio Fazio, the head of the Bank of Italy for approval of the acquisition. A successful bid would give the Spanish banking interest a market capitalization of $66 billion.

ABN Amro gets stuck holding Italian stake

ABN AMRO Holding N.V. of the Netherlands is facing months of uncertainty with the banks $2.78 billion stake in acquisition target Banca Antonveneta S.p.A. The rival bid of Banca Popolare Italiana SCARL is being investigated for possible securities-law violations in a financial controversy that has shaken the Italian banking establishment.
