BP Amoco merger wins U.S. approval; but Exxon's acquisition of Mobil could face harsher antitrust test

Article Abstract:

Thr U.S. government has approved the acquisition of Amoco Corp. by British Petroleum Company PLC. The newly-formed company intends to impliment immediate cost-cutting measures. While the company was not slapped with severe antitrust conditions, it appears that the government will be more stringent concerning the Mobil Corp. acquisition by Exxon Corp. The Amoco acquisition for $53 billion will be outpaced as the largest in history only if Exxon succeeds in its $77 billion merger with Mobil.
