Back in the game

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government is not about to give its support to possible UN sanctions on Serbia for its conflict with Sarajevo. This diplomaticpolicy allows China to show support for an old communist ally, strengthen its role as the voice of the Third World and regain the international clout it lostduring the 1991 Persian Gulf War. China's renewed international respectability has been made evident by a series of high-level visits by Western and Third World countries. With more credibility behind it, China has become a more assertive and independent voice in world issues.

Myopic vision; lack of direction marks China's attitude to Taiwan

Article Abstract:

China's refusal to accept Taiwan's sovereignty has resulted in continuing political strain between the two countries. Commercial interaction has been confined to the private sector due to the lack of diplomatic relations. Conservative elderly Chinese leaders still visualize a reunification with Taiwan but there is hope on the mainland that the next generation of political leaders will take a more positive stand on developing business relations with Taiwan. The Taiwanese, however, remain pessimistic on this issue.

Slow boat for China: Peking's application to join Gatt appears stalled

Article Abstract:

China's entry to the Gatt is being hampered by the country's reluctance to comply with Western demands which it feels are unfair. The country refuses to set up a more unitarynational trading system and for anti-dumping safeguards. Peking is also againstthe conversion to a full market pricing regimen and elimination of non-tariff barriers to trade. Owing to China's non-compliance, analysts are now predictingthat China may join Gatt by 1994 at the earliest.
