Behind the lines: opposition victory in electoral boundary row

Article Abstract:

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) of Malaysia had scoreda major victory over the Malaysian government with the decision of the ElectionCommission to withdraw plans on the establishment of new electoral boundaries in the country. The commission had chosen to set aside the implementation of the boundaries after repeated threats by the DAP that it will challenge the issue in court. Believing that the boundaries were part of government plans foran early general election, the DAP revealed that the boundaries were conceived earlier than the required period, in clear violation of the ideals stipulated in the constitution.

The DAP dilemma: Lin Kit Siang's party has served democracy well, but needs to broaden its base and outgrow its roots in the Chinese community

Article Abstract:

The main opposition party in Malaysia is the Democratic Action Party (DAP). Its main objectives are the promotion of ethnic equality and democratic socialism. After 25 years in opposition, the DAP is moving to reverse its dwindling popularity by offering alternatives in Malaysia's economic and political life. Younger DAP members would like to make changes in the party's constituency that would reflect demographic changes in the country. Others would like the DAP to delineate from its identification with the Malaysian Chinese and to enter into coalitions with other opposition parties.

Prisoner of the past: party leader's confrontational style raises doubts

Article Abstract:

Lim Kiat Siang is the secretary-general of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) of Malaysia. His political style is described as combative and confrontational, a result of the formative period when he first joined politics. Lim was jailed twice during Malaysia's period of racial unrest. Younger DAP members have begun questioning Lim's style because it is politically unproductive and because they see the need to establish links and cooperate with the ruling Malay leadership.
