People's verdict

Article Abstract:

Opponents of the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islam party of Bangladesh reacted to the election of Golam Azam, a non-citizen, as party chairman by organizing on Mar 26, 1992, a people's court wherein they tried and convicted Azam of war crimes during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation struggles. Afterwards, they demanded that the government implement the verdict within a month. The government, which had tolerated Azam's political activities in spite of his illegal status, put him under preventive detention, while the Jamaat-el-Islam elected Abbas Ali Khan as acting chairman.

Strange bedfellows; opposition alliance will come under scrutiny in polls

Article Abstract:

Bangladeshi opposition leader Sheikh Hasina Wajed has forced Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to ask President Abdur Rahman Biswas to dissolve the parliament. Now she must explain to voters why her party, the Awami League, is in cahoots with its longtime foes, Jamaat-e-Islami and the Jatiya Party. All three have acted in concert for some time, despite the lack of a formal alliance, and the League and the Jamaat both threaten countrywide strikes to cripple waterways, railroads, and air links. Elections may come by Jan 15.
