Article Abstract:

Competition in the UK television industry is heating up as digital television, which was introduced only in 1998, gets it share of the market. According to the Independent Television Commission, ITV1 has about 32% of the television audience in the country, compared with about 28% for BBC1. Channel 4 has about 14%, while BBC2 12% and Channel 5 has 4%. On the other hand satellite, cable and digital, account for the remaining 10%. Meanwhile, ONdigital claimed that it has 110,000 subscribers in Apr 1999.

No offensive ads, we're British

Article Abstract:

UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) reported that a mere 10 ads generated 12% of consumer advertising complaints in 1999. The ASA added that the 10 ads resulted in a total of 1,516 public complaints, four of which were found to have violated the British Codes of Advertising and Sales Promotion Practice. Among these ads for Howard Stern's talk show, which included quotes such as 'It is ok for a man to commit adultery if his wife is ugly.'

U.K. marketers in danger of losing online customers

Article Abstract:

A Direct Marketing Assn study warns direct marketers operating in the UK that they are in danger of losing on-line customers because of their failure to immediately answer initial queries and requests for further information. They are reminded to live up to all promises they put on their websites to be able to create consumer trust and build on-line relationships.
