Regulators propose ending dominance by BT of local phone network in U.K

Article Abstract:

Regulators in the UK called for the termination of British Telecommunications PLC's (BT) domination of the local telephone services industry. The end of BT's dominance should speed up the entry of high-speed communications for consumers in the UK. The Office of Telecommunications (Oftel) has two proposals to open BT's local network to competitors. The proposals would enable rivals to upgrade local phone lines operated by BT.
