Article Abstract:

The Australian Liberal-National government has been re-elected, and the Labor party has also performed well, while One Nation has won some 8% of the vote. Howard favors deregulation, a reduction in trade barriers, and low taxes, and has had to face disputes over land rights between aborigines and farmers, and labor unions in the docks. Howard presented proposals for tax reform prior to the election, and this includes a tax on goods and services, with reductions in income tax. The reductions may not be possible if growth is not as high as forecast.

Nettle grasped

Article Abstract:

The Australian conservative government leader, John Howard, plans to reform the tax system and bring in a new consumption tax at 10%. This is to be levied on most goods and services save utility charges, health care, child care and education. There have been few major changes to the tax system for over 50 years. The plan is for state governments to receive the revenue from the new tax, and to abandon their indirect taxes. The coalition government and Howard both lead in opinion polls, and an election could be called for Oct 1998.
