Ballmer: first, develop China's industry

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Inc. Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer discusses China, the software industry, and the post-dot-com bubble economy. Microsoft Inc.'s plans for China include building up the market and industry as a whole in order to sell sofware in the country. Portions of the computer industry as a whole that are failing include suppliers to telecommunications companies and start-ups and since Microsoft Inc. did not get involved in these markets, it will not need to cut its workforce.

China's AsiaInfo Holdings, a dominant telecommunications infrastructure builder and publicly traded software company, is expected to profit no matter who wins in China's telecommunications battlegrounds during the present decade. The company, which was at one time a pure systems integrator, has made inroads building China's Internet and has become a dominant force in the development of national Internet protocol networks. The company's history, growth and management are discussed.
