Banana drama turns serious

Article Abstract:

The US has given the Europen Union (EU) until Jan 1999 to amend its rules concerning the international trade in bananas, as the US contends that the EU does not comply with rules created by the World Trade Organization (WTO). The US Dept of Commerce has suggested that there are a number of non-food items on which duties will be imposed if the EU banana trade amendments are not acceptable. Interpretations of the rules and list among the EU, WTO, and US are still in dispute.

Wide Gulf in understanding

Article Abstract:

The foreign policy of the European Union (EU) was shown to be non-substantive with the possibility of military air strikes by the US against Iraq in Dec 1998, as Great Britain was the only EU member which chose to support the US in the action. Other EU members were lukewarm at best in their support of possible air strikes, but some Arab countries supported the US. There is considerable dispute on the efficiency of UN inspection of Iraq's armaments acapcity.
