For whom the bell tolls

Article Abstract:

Teleworking was hailed in the early 1990s as a significant new business trend, but has failed to live up to expectations. The European Commission estimates that only one in 40 of the working population in European Union member countries currently teleworks, and software supplier Symantec claims that 76% of UK companies do not have a teleworking policy at all. However, many companies and organizations remain committed to teleworking, and some observers believe that teleworking is now becoming a mainstream approach to work. Economic developments in the near future may mean that running a business will inevitably make it necessary to introduce a teleworking policy.

First Tuesday, a club for electronic commerce entrepreneurs, has expanded rapidly since it was founded in Oct 1998. There are now 22 First Tuesday clubs in Europe, offering entrepreneurs the opportunity to meet potential investors. Some significant deals have already been agreed, with internet start-up ClickMango.com, for example, having obtained 3 million pounds sterling of funding in eight days after meetings at a First Tuesday event.

Drugstore cowboys

Article Abstract:

Tight prescription laws throughout Europe and the UK are expected to prevent a rash of companies setting up online drugstores on the Internet. Several have been established in the USA, where the population spends up to $6 on drugs for every $1 spent on literature. UK sites are expected to be limited to selling herbal, vitamin or cosmetic products by law, curbing expansion in the online pharmacy market.
