Bangkok advances plan to open telecom sector

Article Abstract:

Thailand is opening the local telecommunications industry to the private sector. Changes in the country's telecommunications policy are being mulled over, while details of a privatization system are also being threshed out. Two telecommunications firms, the Telephone Organization of Thailand and the Communications Authority of Thailand, are slated for privatization. This move toward free enterprise in the rapidly growing industry is seen to result in much uncertainty and risk, but is also expectedto bring opportunities to local and foreign investors.

In Japan, NTT is target of drive to restructure telecom industry

Article Abstract:

The Japanese government is facing mounting calls for a radical overhaul of the country's telecommunications sector, starting with the breakup of the monopoly being exercised by Nippon Denshin Denwa KK (NTT) over the industry. Specifically, the clamor is for NTT to be divided into several local, regional and international product and services companies. The matter is still being studied by the Third Telecommunication Council, which is made up of representatives from industry, government and the academe.
