Bangladesh's last chance: if this general election goes wrong, the army's patience may snap

Article Abstract:

Through strikes, the opposition Awami League party has helped to cause a shutdown of Bangladesh prior to elections Jun 12, 1996. The army has only been concerned with keeping civil order. Although the generals prefer a democracy, a fiasco at the polls may mean a military takeover will ensue.

Begum Zia's burden

Bangladesh is one of the world's poorest countries with perhaps the world's worst living conditions. It is though, one of the world's few Muslim democracies. Pres Begum Khaleda Zia, widow of the assassinated Zia ur Rahman, faces enormous challenges to improve the nation's welfare.

A vote for bin Laden?

Article Abstract:

Violence has been one of the main issues in Bangladesh's general election campaign until now, and over 100 people have died in violence incidents. The terrorist attacks on the US have brought a new moral issue to the campaign.
