Bank stocks are expected to suffer as c entral banks worldwide raise short-term interest rates. In addition, banks are expected to experience increased funding costs and reductions in business volume . As the banking industry comprises one of the stock market's largest sectors and accounts for a substantial piece of total corporate profits, such a slowdown could have a wider economic impact.

The United Kingdom stock market has posted an 8.6 percent increase to 5229.60, a three year high. The Pound has fallen 8.6 percent and employment growth and the housing market have stabilized. Economic growth in the United Kingdom for the first quarter was revised to 2.1 percent from 2.7 percent.
