Banks face loan problems as Taipei holds back on aid

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's financial system is preparing for more bad loans following the refusal of the government to take over the mortgage loans of collapsed buildings in the wake of the Sept 1999 earthquake. The estimated losses from uncollected mortgages at collapsed buildings vary from $314.5 million to $1.57 billion. Because of the decision, the current overdue-loan ratio of the banking industry is expected to increase by half a percentage point. The specter of setting a precedent for future natural disasters may have prompted the government from extending such form of assistance to the banks.
