Bargaining for position

Article Abstract:

China and Taiwan continue to jockey for political and economic position. China has retreated from overt attempts to coerce Taiwan into unification. Instead, it announced new regulations permitting direct shipping for Taiwanese shippers across the strait. While the Taiwan government responded positively to the announcement, President Lee recently cautioned the business community against becoming too economically dependent on China, and Vice-President Chan made a secret visit to Ukraine. Taiwan's aggressive stance may have precipitated China's announcement because the regulations were completed months earlier.

Wishful thinking

Article Abstract:

China is keen to carry out reunification with Taiwan, but Taiwan is less keen on joining China. The leadership of China and Taiwan exchange slogans as part of their dispute. Taiwan has its own army and there is popular support for independence for Taiwan, according to opinion polls which show that those in favor may outnumber those opposed to independence. This is the first time a majority has favored independence. Meanwhile relations between China and Taiwan are improving in many ways, with semiofficial and private visits.

Change of face

Article Abstract:

Chinese President Jiang Zemin retains his relative popularity in Taiwan despite the barrage of missiles and threats from the mainland. A Jan 1995 speech that seemed to seek a rapprochement cemented his image as a pragmatist, and his supporters in Taiwan still hold the view that he has taken a hard-line stance recently because of China's internal politics, not because he wants to. Some critics in Taiwan say that belief is naive and dangerous, however, and that Jiang will go where the political winds blow.
