Barriers to Lao growth

Article Abstract:

Laos' economic reform program is credited with raising the country's gross domestic product, keeping inflation within manageable levels and stabilizing the exchange rate in 1991. However, there are still barriers hindering economic growth in Laos. There is still widespread poverty in rural areas. Additionally, the budget deficit continues to grow. Foreign aid grants and foreign investments are badly needed by the country to sustain the economic improvements it made in 1991.

Hanoi's free-for-all ways

Article Abstract:

Chaotic traffic conditions have developed in Hanoi, Vietnam since the country's Communist rulers began liberalizing the economy in 1987. Vehicles have proliferated both in number and variety. Motorcycles, for instance, increase by about 20% a year. The dearth of public transport and the non-existence of traffic laws have aggravated the situation. Accidents have also become much more common, with 239 people having been killed in collisions in Hanoi in 1992.

Serving hard time: inmates face harsh conditions in prisons

Article Abstract:

Conditions in Vietnamese jails are miserable and overcrowded. Convicts are sent to prison camps where conditions are somewhat better and they can work to earn money for food. However, many prisoners must bribe prison guards to survive, and political prisoners face violence from common criminals. Prison officials maintain that food shortages and health problems have been alleviated and blame continuing problems on lack of funding.
