Barter makes a comeback

Article Abstract:

Barter, trading goods without cash, is making a comeback in Asia. There are inquiries for barter deals with Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines worth A$150 mil (US$100.5 mil) according to the president of the Australian Counter Trade Assoc., Malcolm Taylor. He has received unsolicited inquiries from the US, Canada and Singapore from those wanting to be involved in countertrade. If the only thing the Asian company has is something not needed in Australia, that will likely be sold to a trading house in Asia which will collect hard cash to be paid directly to the Australian supplier.

Risky business: saving your investments in Asia

Article Abstract:

Australian banks are giving exporters of essential commodities such as wheat, coal, and steel priority over other exporters during the Asian financial crisis. The head of international trade in business financial services at National Australia Bank argues that the crisis has sharpened banks' focus on risk management. Risk management products in demand are letters of credit, open accounts, interest rate risk management, and confirmation of letters of credit.
