Battered Bhutto: government is beset by political and fiscal woes

Article Abstract:

A surge of political and economic problems have Pakistan's government and Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto reeling, possibly presaging the collapse of an administration that had seemed ready to succeed where its predecessors could not. Bhutto has angered the country's senior judiciary, the military is upset over widespread corruption, and a budget calling for sharp tax hikes angered businessmen and the provinces. The International Monetary Fund has also thrown into doubt Pakistan's credibility by withholding a promised loan.

Fear and loathing: Bhutto speech adds fuel to Karachi fires

Article Abstract:

Violence and political turmoil in Karachi overshadow Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's other problems, and the troubles in Pakistan's commercial hub and only port continue to worsen. A May 25, 1995 speech by Bhutto angered members of the Muhajir Qaumi Movement, militant elements of which were already creating a wave of violence that has now worsened. Car bombs and now missiles are a frequent occurrence, but Bhutto refuses to either let the military control the city or hold talks with what she determinedly calls terrorists.

Riches to rubble

Article Abstract:

Increasing violence in Karachi following the military's withdrawal is adding pressure on Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and President Farooq Leghari. Several religious and political groups wage incessant warfare in the city, and the rest of the country endures similar strife as well as a deep recession. Legislators in Bhutto's party in two provinces are threatening rebellion, and her political clumsiness has helped her chief opponent, Nawaz Sharif, who is said to be seeking army backing.
