Beating expectations

Article Abstract:

The Swiss economy experienced a year of robust growth in 1998 as all major sectors of the economy reported healthy sales increases. In 1999, the business climate is expected to remain favorable with vigorous sales growth projected in telecommunications and information technology. High sales growth is also predicted in the pharmaceutical, chemical and insurance sectors. The watchmaking and construction industries, however, may have little sales growth. Inflation is also expected to remain low in 1999 while investments are projected to rise as the country's restructuring continues.

Capacity precommitment as an entry barrier for price-setting firms

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to evaluate the capacity of investment as an entry barrier to markets. The study assumes that firms are homogeneous except for first mover precommitment possibilities which the incumbent enjoys. A three-stage cooperative game is established where a capacity level is set, entrant selects capacity and firms set prices based on mixed strategies. Results show that entry barriers may be set with either positive or negative profits.

Investment and market power

Article Abstract:

A strong relationship exists between investment and market power within an industry. The degree of market power is, in fact, a crucial determinant of difference in investment patterns. A neoclassical investment model shows that as market power is positively associated with capital stock flexibility, firms adjust their investment behavior quickly in response to changes to capture the rents associated with their market power.
