Bechtel breaks new ground in China: firm's executives consider themselves project-financing guinea pigs

Article Abstract:

Bechtel Enterprises Inc. plans to construct a major project-financed toll road in Shenzhen, China. The six-lane Shenzhen-Heao toll road, which will rely on the revenue it generates to pay off bank loans or bonds, will cost from $300 million to $400 million, depending on bids from local contractors. The US construction giant and its partners are also prepared to guarantee construction costs, the completion timetable, the quality of construction work and the volume of traffic on the road.

Strain in ties with China may hamper U.S. firms

Rising political tensions between the US and China are threatening to erode the plans of US-based companies to increase their investments in the latter. Shanghai, China mayor Xu Kuangdi has announced the cancellation of his meeting with the US' top corporate leaders due to the tensions between the two countries. Mercedes Benz AG has also edged out US automakers in a minivan production venture.

China to replace chairman of market regulatory body

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government recently announced the appointment of banker Zhou Daojiong as the new chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission. Zhou replaces Liu Hongru, who is scheduled to announce his retirement in the next few weeks. Observers believe that Zhou's appointment will bring a new period of heightened scrutiny in the country's stock, bond and commodities markets.
