Beer in Italy

Article Abstract:

Italian beer production in 1998 amounted to 12.19 million hl, valued at 2.24 trillion Italian lira. Beer imports for the period reached 3.7 million hl, accounting for around 24% of Italian beer consumption. Beer exports for the year amounted to just 373,000 hl. The Italian brewing industry comprises a few key players, of which the largest are Heineken Italia SpA, SpA Birra Peroni Industriale and Carlsberg Italia SpA. Italy's beer market is forecast to show slow growth in the future, with a shift towards more expensive brands.

Article Abstract:

In 1993, beer sales fell 2.2% in volume to less than 5.9 billion litres, on value up 1% to 11.1 billion pounds sterling. Of total volume sales, lager made up 50.5%, although stout, ale and bitter enjoyed increased popularity. More than 66% of beer sales are made via on-trade licensed outlets on draught. Non-lager beers

Article Abstract:

Consumption of non-lager beer in the UK is forecast to increase from 718 million litres in 1998 to 768 million litres by 2003, although market value is forecast to fall from 1,063.3 million pounds sterling in 1998 to 1,054.1 million pounds sterling by 2003. Dark beers accounted for 84.3% of the non-lager beer market in 1998, with sales of 846.1 million pounds sterling. The growing home consumption market is expected to help increase sales by 10.2% from 1998 to 2003.
