Beer marketers blamed for AIDS spread in Cambodia

Article Abstract:

Beer marketers in Cambodia are blamed for the spread of AIDS. There are 4,000 to 5,000 beer girls employed in mostly Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Their jobs are to persuade the customer at the point of purchase to buy their brand of beer rather than those advertised by the other girls. Officials at the Ministry of Health say many of them have sex with clients after work; some for money, some not. A 1997 survey by the Ministry of Health showed that only around 10% of the beer girls always used condoms compared to 42% of prostitutes.

Cambodia's cigarette label war

Article Abstract:

Cambodia's Ministry of Commerce has warned of legal action against local cigarette manufacturers and importers due to their failure to affix mandatory safety warning labels to packs of imported cigarettes. The warning came in the wake of a finance ministry investigation finding that under 2% of imported cigarette brands sold in the kingdom carry required safety warnings. Cigarette companies are given only a month to ensure that safety warning labels are affixed to all cigarette packs sold in Cambodia.

Cambodia cigarette ads thrive

Article Abstract:

Cigarette advertising is booming in Cambodia in contrast to trends elsewhere. Its neighbours, particularly Thailand, have embarked on tough anti-smoking campaigns which include strict controls on advertising. However, in Cambodia, cigarette advertising has increased by 400% since 1994 and accounts for nearly half the entire advertising revenue in the country. Cigarette companies have been criticized by the World Health Organization for targeting improverished countries, such as Cambodia.
