Supertankers head for the skies

Article Abstract:

Air forces get the flexibility they require for a wide range of military operations from the increasing use of wide-bodied airliners as aerial tankers. The biggest new tanker/transport acquisition under way is the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) program that will take the place of the VC10s and TriStars operated by the UK Royal Air Force. The FSTA will have a secondary air transport role, carrying both passengers and freight, in addition to its primary air-to-air refueling capability. Candidate platforms for the program include new and second-hand variants of the Airbus A310, A330 and A400M and Boeing 767, DC-10 and MD-11.

A bird in the hand: miniature and micro air vehicles challenge conventional thinking

Article Abstract:

Micro air vehicles (MAVs) are lauded for their special functions in the military as well as their cost-efficiency. MAVs were a result of a program by the US Defensxe Advanced Research Projects Agency, which created air vehicles with maximum lengths of 15 cm, but can perform such tasks as stand-off sensing and close-in operations. The minute vehicles cost $1,000 and are ideal for such purposes as surveillance and reconnaissance, detection and determination of biological or chemical substances, and communications relay, among other functions.
