Helicopter sonar solutions challenges submarine threat

Article Abstract:

The latest generation of helicopter-mounted dipping sonars can detect extremely quiet, small diesel-electric submarines in shallow, reverbation- rich coastal waters with high ambient noise levels. The sonars use lower frequencies, coupled with new transduce and beamforming technology to achieve this goal. The two leading models are the Thomson Marconi Sonar Folding Light Acoustic System for Helicopters which operates between 3-5 kHz and the L-3 Communications Ocean Systems Helicopter Long-Range Active Sonar which operates at around 1.3 kHz.
